The role of blogging for women liberation (day12 #WinterABC24)

Blogging has always been a means of expressing one’s right to freedom of speech. It is therefore not surprising that it has become a tool for free speech. And it become more and more evident that this is the case for many African women and the diaspora. For many of them, blogging has become one the most effective way to express themselves freely, whether openly or anonymously

African feminists were able to make use of it for women liberation. Platforms like Blogger, LiveJournal, and WordPress provided the necessary tools for these voices to be heard, leading to a proliferation of feminist content online.

For example, in our conservative African societies, pleasure is still a taboo topic. But In 2009, Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah chose to start a blog titled ‘Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women’. Her blog’s success was largely due to its open discussion of sexual experiences, desires, and fantasies without feeling guilty.

Blogging has also provided an opportunity for African feminists to own their narrative. Many African feminist blogs also cover serious topics like violence against women and girls.  Through blogging, African feminists like me have been able to explore subjects more deeply from an African feminist perspective. For example EYALA is a bilingual african feminist blog. We also have africanfeminism.com . You can aslo read ‘Telling our own stories’: African women blogging for social change

Blogging has both positives and negatives side. Regrettably, it has played a role in the development of sexist and anti-rights misinformation. And, not everyone values the freedom of expression that blogging provides. Currently, several governments censor bloggers, and some of them are even facing jail time.

But at the end of the day, I can say that yes, blogging have a role in shaping societal discourse and driving change.
